Things I’ve learnt in my 8 months of blogging

Time certainly does fly by when you have a baby doesn’t it! So now that I’m not such a newbie anymore I thought I would share with you the things that I’ve learnt in my 8 months since I started blogging.

First of all I can tell you that going self-hosted has been one of the best things I’ve ever done, and it’s so worth it if you’re serious about blogging and getting to work with many wonderful brands and PR’s, but obviously those things are bonus’, it’s the social interaction and the followership that you gain which is most rewarding. I’ve also written a blog post over on One hull of a dad’s blog about going self-hosted and my thoughts on WordPress, you can read that here.

Plugins, are another great tool that you’ll get to use if you go self-hosted (with WordPress anyway) they can help you do so many things and adds so much more functionality and interactivity to your website, for example, my favourite plugin at the moment is the Instagram feed plugin as it enables me to insert my whole feed anywhere on my blog, be it sidebar, home page or in a blog post itself.

Blog envy? If there is even such a thing, I think we’ve all been there, that inevitable feeling you get when you stumble across a blog that has a way prettier theme than you or a fancier header with illustrations galore. But something I’ve learnt is not to feel jealous or envious of another person’s blog because if everyone had the exact same theme and the same content it would be boring and no one would stand out.

Taking images in landscape mode, this one was a new one to me, I didn’t give two monkeys which way round I took a photo, but apparently it actually does matter as if you take pictures in landscape mode they’ll look much nicer in full size than if you uploaded it in portrait mode, don’t ask me to explain why because I’m no photographer I just like sharing cute pics of my son.

If I was to give you just 1 piece of advice for starting up a blog, then it would be this:

Just enjoy yourself, there’s no right or wrong, there’s no word limit or photo spamming in this world, just do what makes you happy, and write about stuff you feel happy writing about, dont just follow the croud, unless its a tag post then thats ok, but asllong as you’re enjoying reading your own content then you’re on the right track!

Just because I can, here’s a picture of Logan sporting his new sun hat! <3 How adorable

If you have any other tips or nifty tricks to add to this list then let me know in the comments below 🙂 Happy blogging xxx
